Well done to our GWSC ‘Senior Boys’ Table Tennis Team who were victorious in the 2025 ‘School Sport Victoria’ Senior Table Tennis Championships on Wednesday the 13th of August. This mighty team secured back-to-back State Titles after once again turning the tables on their opponents at MSAC Stadiums.
Our ‘Senior Boys’ Table Tennis team certainly know how to grind out a game and hold their nerve at critical points in a match. Time and again these six young men have proven that united, they can claw their way back into any contest, no matter how far behind they are on the scoreboard. They simply re-set, re-focus and move onto the next point, followed by the next, until they hit that magical mark of 11. Time then for the next set…. Their tilt at the 2025 ‘SSV’ Senior Boys Table Tennis State Championship followed a very similar path to the previous year, one which again guided them to a hard-fought victory against a long-term rival.
Together, our team of Lucas Lum (11), Leo Zheng (10), Eric Lin (8), Vinh Vuong (10), Ryan Be (12) and Bohan Hou (11) progressed through the first two of their pool games with easy victories against North Geelong Secondary College and Bairnsdale Secondary College, before going down narrowly to Melbourne High School 4-2. This left our ‘Senior Boys’ Table Tennis team sitting in second position within their group, setting up a semi-final with Nossal High School. After 6 quick rubbers were won by Team GWSC, we moved onto the grand final and a re-match against Melbourne High School.
The grand final was one for the ages, with the four singles matches evenly shared by both schools, leaving the two doubles encounters to settle the score. Our ‘A1’ pair were in a hurry to finish their match, taking the win 3-1 in a whirlwind encounter. This left our second doubles team the task of having to secure at least two sets from their MHS opponents. After dropping the first set, our ‘A2’ pair set about winning the second set and did so convincingly. The next was an absolute arm wrestle, with both sides trading scintillating shots from all angles on the table, resulting in a narrow two-point third set victory for Melbourne High School. Our GWSC pair then left nothing in the tank to secure the fourth set and level the match at 2 sets a piece.
One of the Melbourne High School players then indicated that he did not want to continue on with the match due to a leg injury and the fact that GWSC had already won enough sets to secure the overall victory. With this forfeited fifth set awarded to GWSC, our ‘Senior Boys’ Table Tennis team secured their second ‘SSV’ State Championship in succession with a final score of 4-2! We are so proud of these six amazing young sportsmen and congratulate them on their back-to-back ‘SSV’ State Championships!
