GWSC ‘Senior Mixed’ Badminton Team – ‘SSV’ State Runner’s Up!
Congratulations to our GWSC ‘Senior Mixed’ Badminton Team who took home the silver medal at the recent 2025 ‘School Sport Victoria’ Senior Badminton Championships at MSAC Stadiums on Monday the 11th of August. They were our second sports team at GWSC so far this year to finish Runner’s Up at States!
Our ‘Senior Mixed’ Badminton Team were the first of five GWSC teams to qualify for a State Final played at MSAC this year, in either badminton or table tennis. Although they had many challenges thrown their way on the competition day, they took each in their stride…Little did their opposition know, but every member of this team has the HEART of a lion beating in their chest, which enabled them to display unwavering determination, courage, and passion especially when facing adversity and overwhelming odds at MSAC. They firstly battled their way through a very tough qualifying pool, securing victories over Trafalgar High School and Melbourne High School, before narrowly going down 5-1 to Maribyrnong Sports Academy to qualify for the Semi Finals as second seed from Pool A. Together, with their fearless attitude and tireless commitment to giving maximum effort during each point, they swept past Notre Dame College five rubbers to one and secured another shot at Maribyrnong Sports Academy in the State Final.
The final was an epic encounter, with all four singles rubbers going down to the wire with a number of shuttles just rolling over the tape whilst others caught the line by the tip of a feather. MSA took a commanding 3-1 lead into the doubles, but our powerful pairings were fearless and gave their all to take one of the doubles rubbers whilst narrowly succumbing to Maribyrnong in the other. MSA were worthy winners on the day, but our GWSC ‘Senior Mixed’ Badminton Team consisting of Sarah Ung (12), Dorothy Liang (11), Yuhao Shen (11), Jivi Rajkumar Sathiyanarayanan (11), Ivan Cheng (12) and Jay Wang (12) were brave in defeat and should hold their heads high. We are so proud of this team, who now have a State silver medal to go with their gold from last year….
